Jule

Christmas is coming..and its fun and brightens up the days and nights

Warming up for Christmas is a national sport here and the simplest traditions are taking the city by storm. There are the ones I noticed last year .. the country wide launch of the extra strength Christmas Beer in November -complete with strict rules for delay of service of the special brew until 10pm .. unless you can find an obliging kiosk, snow being brought into the streets, delivery by Horse and cart .. or semi trailers where the crowds are biggest and complete snowflake & mistleto outfits; drinking Gløgg - a warm red wine mixed with dried fruit almonds and the irrepressible aquavit; served in glasses with a tea spoon to finish the soaked fruit and nuts and with slim ginger biscuits "brun kage" or the tiny crunchy ginger balls "pebber nødder"; æbble skiver - little donut type balls served hot with icing sugar and jam; ice skating rinks in the town squares; the Christmas Lights on the D'Angleterre Hotel- this year they have laden the facade with thousands of tree ornaments all of them the different sized glass multicoloured christmas balls and lit them so they just glow innocently and the effect is marvellous. The new ones I noticed for the first time are lumps of modelling clay sold in the supermarkets these are for the bases of your own Christmas decorations - table and window sill displays made of fir branches and candles. We made a couple of crooked attempts that look like bad christmas cards which I love.

Current Favourite Artist Peter Land

With very simple technical means, Peter Land succeeds in giving a new refreshing meaning to the tradition of body art. Seriousness and moralising gestures are abandoned on behalf of humour, self-mockery, and a keen eye for the situation of man at the end of the 20th century. His interest in the human body arises from an entirely sculptural interest. http://www.nicolaiwallner.com/artists/peter/baselinstallation1.html
